Boo Unique layout

This scrapbook page was inspired by something I always tell my workshop participants about Glimmer Mist and ink in general.  Ink changes things.  If you don't like the paper you have to work with, or just don't have the right paper to begin with -- ink can make it happen.  Even if you've got cartoon chocolate chips with smiley faces - and it's in that bin -- you know the one... the I'll donate this - the kids can use it - what was I thinking when I bought this bin.  It is still redeemable.  Even that chocolate chip paper can be flipped over to the white side and VOILA!  Blank.Canvas.

So I took a piece of paper that I actually do like, but didn't want to use it in my traditional manner.  This white/black paper from Rouge de Garance -- and transformed it.

 
You can see another layout where I used this background paper with a completely different result here.

First, lots of Glimmer Mist on the background, in Apple, Haunted Shadow and Sugar Maple.  Then, I dribbled Gesso over the top, thinned down with some Vanilla Cream Glimmer Mist.  I then sprayed Vanilla cream all over the top and let it drip and ran a plastic comb over it.  Much more spooky than the original paper.

 
The title, is a flocked/resist title from Heidi Swapp for Tattered Angels.  It said 'Be unique' - so I chopped off the 'e' and made it unique -- with a bit of OO in the form of Chipboard letter frames.

 

And knowing that white and black are what makes a colorful project POP - I took my Faber Castell Big Brush marker and overlayed the clear embossed/resist design (in the vertical/middle of the layout) to make the resist more contrasted to the darker colors of Glimmer Mist.  It took almost no effort at all.  The Big Brush is India Ink - so it's got that DARK ink which is also waterproof.  And it also was resisted by the design - so no hard tracing required.  I just overlayed it with the Big Brush and the designs popped out.  Besides the resist, the India Ink, while a lovely dark, rich matte black, was also translucent enough to allow the mica to show through.

 
So this detailed pen-work was really as simple as Rice Crispie treats to create.  It just looks like it took all day!

A Happy Birthday Card for Mac!

It's a pretty safe bet that my FIL isn't going to be reading the blog, so it is safe to go ahead and post his birthday card here.

 

I used a combination of papers from Pink Paislee's Bayberry Cottage collection and Cosmo Cricket's Gretel collection.  The focal point includes a definition sticker and chipboard letters and shapes from Cosmo Cricket. 

The background is accented with a contrast-stitched brown ribbon, layered with Filmstrip Ribbon from Tim Holtz for Advantus.  These are framed by a postage stamp frame from the alphabet collection by Tattered Angels.  I colored this with Sugar Maple Glimmer Mist. 

A Momento brown inkpad was used to edge throughout.  A light coat of Crushed Shells Glimmer Mist was sprayed overall to pick up the mix of metals and yellow 'dot' in the patterned paper.

A crystal sticker was applied as well as a pewter charm and ticket acrylic, colored with Copic Markers and topped with a few strands of colored waxed linen thread.

Scrappy Goodness...part 2

As promised, here are some more scrapbook layouts from this weekend.  All pictures are clickable for a larger view if you'd like.

This first page was done with a kit from BoBunny Designs that was given to the attendees.  I immediately gravitated to the dark brown paper as a great backdrop for our Fourth of July photos - to give it an evening feel.

To brighten things up a bit, I used a white gel pen for the journaling.  I also placed a Hambly white overlay on the fireworks picture from their Urban Chic Frames.

And used my Copic markers to colorize the crystals on the butterfly and crystal swirls and corner to coordinate with my layout. 

I also used Glimmer Mist in 'Chocolate Covered Cherries' to give the otherwise flat-looking black chipboard letters some fireworks of their own and added pearl dewdrops as well.

 

Next up is a hybrid layout of all of the kids and their cousins during our trip to Hilton Head Island.  I utilized a kit from Scrap Within Reach, changing the colors to coordinate with my photos.

I dragged the edges of the layouts through brown Glimmer Mist.   And I stamped images from the Beach stamp set in Momento Brown ink, into the framed squares.

I'm not one to spend time making something look dimensional on the computer, but I am happy to report that the ink from my Epson R1800 didn't mind the use of Glossy Accents upon this trio of circle embellishments.  No movement at all.  I also stamped a tree and placed a little Glimmer Glass birdie upon the scene.
 

And last up for tonight, another hybrid layout.  I used a picture of the surf as a background for the blue 'paper'.  Other digital elements from a kit by Corina Neilsen.

I stamped the cream chipboard letters with brown Momento ink using the Definitions stamp by Tim Holtz for Stampers Anonymous.  I borrowed this from Jen and loved it so much, I bought one for myself today. 

I wanted that text on the chipboard letters to coordinate with the background text on the elements on the page.  I also Glimmer Misted this newspaper flower to coordinate all beachy-like and then used Chalkboard Glimmer Mist in Hot Chocolate to change the color of this felt embellishment from turquoise to a dusty blue.  I love the opacity of the chalkboard colors.

Mixed Media on Tumbled Tile

Back in June I visited Toronto, Ontario, Canada for the first time and taught workshops at a wonderful shop called Bizzy B's.  Barb, the owner, gave me a tumbled tile to decorate.  They place these on the wall in the store.  The pretty gallery of tiles is lovely to see.  But this little tile has been sitting on my counter for far too long - so this morning I attacked.

Tumbled marble tiles are fun to decorate.  The surface isn't sealed, so you can do a lot of neat techniques.  It's slightly glossy, but does absorb liquid media.

For my first step, I did a quick test by spraying Glimmer Mist lightly on the tile, over a butterfly stencil and then immediately blotted it off with a paper towel.

It definitely stained the surface, so I knew I was on the right track.  In order to make the Glimmer Mist dry more evenly on subsequent coats, I lightly sprayed the surface with Copic Blending Solution.  It has been my experience that once dry, this gives the Glimmer Mist 'tooth' on glossy surfaces and allows it to go on more smoothly.

Apply a second coat of Glimmer Mist and allow it to dry thoroughly.  Leave the stencil in place as it dries.

Look at that glimmer!

This is a great background - but I wanted to pump up the color and the details of the stencil image a bit more, so I airbrushed with three Copic Markers (RV25 / V17 / BG07), with a little B21 around the edges for definition of the outline.

Copic Markers are translucent, so you can see the Glimmer Mist underneath this layer.  It's so pretty in person!

I collaged on some book page punched flowers with Tutu Pink Glimmer Glam on the front and back to act as a gel medium adhesive, decoration and sealer for the delicate papers.  I outlined this loosely with a purple Identipen.

I stamped a flower (Stampendous) with Stazon ink over the collaged flowers.  I highlighted the phrase 'suited her coloring' with RV23, which because of the properties of the ink, removed any of the Stazon ink from the flower image that had overlapped the wording.  It's much easier to read in person.  I love the serendipity of finding that phrase on the book print...

And now it is boxed up and ready to go to its new home in Toronto.

I cannot believe it is August 1st.  My July hiatus was short, but very sweet and now I am back on the road.  I kind of jumped the gun by ONE DAY, demoing for Scrap-Mart at the CKC in Valley Forge yesterday -- but I will post about the show later.  After all my first workshops are next weekend and I have one more shipment to put together.

Tiles make me think about decorating and home interiors.  On the home front, the most I've been doing lately is a constant assault on Flat Surface Syndrome.  But now that my creative needs have been met I need to get back to painting clapboard.  (which is wayyyy less fun, btw).  But a bit of home maintenance has been going on for a while, and Joe is now working on the garage area.  There is NOTHING like a good handyman when your house needs a bit of sprucing up.  All of the wood around the windows, white framing and now the clapboard and underlying plywood around both garage doors is being replaced.  But whatever 'Casa MacDonald' needs, she gets.

A Royal Cover Up for the Beach

Here's a quick couple of techniques that you can use to make the portions of the Heidi Swapp folder album cover work for ANY theme.

You can place a base coat of Glimmer Mist onto the surface and quickly buff it off the surface to reveal the designs.  But what if the designs don't suit your theme?  Do a royal cover up!

After the first coat is dry, add a second coat, a bit heavier - and let it dry naturally.  The Glimmer Mist will adhere to the resist coating.  As long as you don't buff it off, it will adhere and make the designs more subtle.

You can also use a little bit of paper and decoration to obscure the design.   I have done this to the front cover.  As you can see, the front cover has a crest and lion.  Simply covering them with a small piece of patterned paper, perhaps a patterned transparency -- and you can make it work for any theme.

 

No longer royal - but a pretty swirly design surrounding your other items.

For the back cover, I'm using a combination of Glimmer Screens and Screen Print stamp to obscure the crown design.

And don't forget the other side of the pages!  By simply adding a scoring line, about one inch from the top of the hole-punched side, you can easily flip pages up to get more use out of them.

 

Just remember their orientation when you are designing pages in case you want to make a scene like the beach scene I showed above.  Ask me how I know.  LOL.

You Are So Sweet - a House Mouse Card

After the kids' lemonade stand this weekend, I wanted to make a card for one of our neighbors who supported the kids and I enjoyed catching up with too. 

 
The kids made enough money, with a little matching funds from Mommy & Daddy to donate $95.00 to www.imms.org in support of taking care of the marine life affected by the Gulf oil spill.

This little House Mouse stamp that I picked up when I was up in Toronto, teaching at Bizzy B's, seemed appropos to use for the card.

 

A little Copic coloring is always fun too of course.  I colored my lemonade with Y00/Y21/Y32.  I colored the glass with N0 and BG0000, since the illustrator was kind enough to draw the glass with 'thickness' and dimension.  I colored the mouse with E31/E34/E55 and R00/R20, and pushed a little overlay of W2 over the top to grey up the mouse a bit.

I cut out the frame from the Webster's Pages papers and layered them with some solid cardstock in pastel colors.

Silver self adhesive decorative stud corners embellish the two opposite corners.

Finally a newspaper punched flower is spritzed with Vintage Pink Glimmer Mist and stemmed with a bit of olive rick rack.  I topped the flower with a pin button from American Crafts, and adhered the sentiment, printed on a clear label.

The weather is considerably cooler today, at only 80 degrees.  I'm going to do a quick check of the radar map (since we had lots of lightening storms yesterday afternoon) before taking the kids to the pool.

Shabby Cherries Card with Webster's Pages

I don't make a lot of projects during the Summer - for three short reasons. ;)  Time is at a premium, and there is just too much fun to be had.  After a tea party lunch, complete with cake and an afternoon of thunder showers, the kids are back to camping out in the family room for one more night.

  
So tonight I decided to take one piece of paper and see where it led me.  I used a piece of paper from Webster's Pages as my inspiration...from the 'Sweet as Cherry Pie' collection.

 
I used both sides, taking the border from one side for the upper right hand corner; and using an exacto knife to lift out the sentiment and make it the sentiment for the entire card.

I took a piece of mini ball trim and masked off the two parts of the design.  I made 'cherries' by spraying them with Scarlet Glimmer Mist and then painted the top part with the new Apple Glimmer Mist.

I combined a light coat of Cherry Limeade Glimmer Mist with an overcoast of Scarlet to the chipboard frame.

I sprayed white rose leaves with English Ivy or Apple Glimmer Mist, alternately.

A couple of flowers and metal photo corners complete the design.
